According to the TRAI, the 1600 series numbers are mandated for service and transaction calls by regulated entities of BFSI sector.

These calls are for entities regulated by RBI, SEBI, IRDAI and PFRDA to their existing customers and by government entities for government to citizen communication. 

“A key objective of assigning designated series for these important communications is to make such calls trustworthy for the customers/ citizen. Under the Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulation (TCCCPR), any tagging, blocking or filtering of the calls originating from 1600 series numbers is not permitted,” the TRAI said in a statement.

Moreover, the use of 140xx series numbers has been mandated for making promotional calls by entities of any sector. 

“Entities desirous of availing 140 series number for making promotional calls must register with Telecom Service Providers under the TCCCPR framework and comply with the provisions of the regulation. The customers have the right to allow or block promotional call originating from 140 series numbers from entities of any or all sectors by registering their preference on the Do Not Disturb (DND) registry,” informed the telecom regulator.

It further stated that a customer who has blocked any or all sectors from receiving promotional calls on the DND registry will not receive any calls from 140 series originating from entities of the blocked sectors. 

The statement said that the customer can register his/her DND preference through multiple means including through TRAI DND App. 

Any tagging or filtering of calls from 140 series numbers is not allowed except for blocking on the DND registry, as any tagging can mislead a customer who has otherwise allowed receipt of such calls from a sector on the DND registry, it added.

The Meta‑owned messaging platform has also been granted an additional three days to respond to the government notice seeking clarification on the feature. The original deadline for WhatsApp’s reply had lapsed on Friday.

WhatsApp had proposed a username option which would allow users to communicate on WhatsApp without sharing their phone numbers.

The Central government issued a formal notice last week expressing concerns that such a move could heighten risks of online fraud, phishing and impersonation. The government asked WhatsApp to keep the feature on hold until discussions address its security and consumer‑protection concerns, and a Meta delegation met officials from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology on Friday to discuss the matter.

Earlier this week, WhatsApp reiterated that several safeguards have been built into the username feature to prevent impersonation, scams and unwanted contact as it prepares for a wider rollout later this year.

The messaging platform addressed a series of frequently asked questions on microblogging platform X after concerns were raised over the feature, including by the government, which has asked the company to defer its rollout in the country pending consultations.

The company said users will not be required to create a username and that existing Instagram and Facebook usernames, along with those of public figures, celebrities, government entities and Meta Verified accounts, have been reserved so they can only be claimed by their legitimate owners.

The report from Bangladesh-based The Daily Star warned that the export-led, labour-intensive growth model is under pressure as manufacturers adopt automation and digital production systems.

Further, it flagged the rapid surge in high‑value services that often lack social protection.

The transition comes at a time when large segments of the workforce remain in insecure or informal employment, and young people, women and persons with disabilities are particularly vulnerable to displacement and limited access to reskilling.

"The pressures are likely to intensify as Bangladesh approaches LDC graduation. The withdrawal of preferential trade access will sharpen competitive pressures in export sectors, particularly RMG, accelerating the shift towards automation and higher-productivity production systems," the report said.

Citing official labour data, the report noted that the country lost nearly 1.3 million jobs in 2024, with about 90 per cent of those losses affecting women.

Automation especially became disruptive in the ready‑made garments sector, where some estimates suggest up to 60 per cent of female jobs could disappear by 2041 if current trends continue.    

Current policy instruments of Bangladesh fail to solve these problems as challenges from AI, the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) reform have yet to be effectively integrated into sector-specific transition strategies and workforce adaptation mechanisms.

The report argued that skills systems of Bangladesh are failing to meet labour market demands as TVET lacks strong connections with industry and emerging sectors.

"TVET should be reformed to be industry-led and outcome-focused by collaborating with employers on curricula, expanding apprenticeships, and aligning training with new sectors and international labour markets," it said.

The move aims to protect India's creator economy, film industry, broadcasters, OTT platforms, producers, and distributors from the adverse impact of digital piracy.

Earlier, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) had blocked Telegram in India till June 22 as a precautionary measure ahead of the NEET-UG 2026 re-exam.

"Both measures have been taken in the interest of public order, in response to the organised use of the platform by cheating rackets to defraud candidates appearing for the NEET (UG) 2026 re-examination scheduled on 21 June 2026," the National Testing Agency (NTA) said last month.

Significantly, the Delhi High Court had upheld the Centre's decision to temporarily suspend Telegram's services across India ahead of the NEET (UG) 2026 re-examination, ruling that the government had strictly followed the procedure prescribed under law while invoking emergency blocking powers and that the restrictions satisfied the test of proportionality.

Dismissing a petition filed by Telegram FZ LLC challenging the MeitY blocking order, a single-judge Bench of Justice Tejas Karia held that the temporary suspension of the messaging platform till June 22 and disabling of its message-editing feature till June 30 were justified in the circumstances surrounding the nationwide medical entrance examination.

Google had reinstated the application on the 'Play Store' in India after June 22.

The I&B Ministry's latest directive to Telegram comes days after the Centre issued a notice to Meta over the proposed rollout of its username feature on WhatsApp, the Meta-owned company.

The government asked Meta not to roll out the "usernames" feature in India until consultations on the matter are completed, the sources added.

In response to the Centre's notice, messaging platform WhatsApp has clarified that its upcoming username feature will be optional and reiterated that several safeguards have been built in to prevent impersonation, scams and unwanted contact as it prepares for a wider rollout later this year.

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has enabled residents to add or update their email IDs in Aadhaar directly through the Aadhaar App, eliminating the need to visit an Aadhaar enrolment or update centre.

The facility, which became effective from July 1, 2026, is being offered free of cost through the Aadhaar App for a period of six months.

"This is a free service via the Aadhaar App only, effective 1 July 2026 for a period of six months, making it easier than ever for residents to keep their Aadhaar information up to date," the Ministry of Electronics & IT said.

The initiative is aimed at making Aadhaar services more accessible while reducing the need for physical visits, in line with the government's Digital India vision and the goal of building a Viksit Bharat.

Linking an email ID with Aadhaar enables residents to receive real-time email alerts whenever an Aadhaar authentication request is carried out.

The feature enhances transparency and adds an extra layer of security by keeping Aadhaar holders informed about the use of their identity credentials.

The new Aadhaar App has been designed to simplify access to multiple Aadhaar-related services through smartphones. Apart from email updates, residents can also update their mobile numbers and addresses using the app.

The government said over 40 lakh people have already updated their mobile numbers through the Aadhaar App, while around 10 lakh residents have used it to update their addresses.

UIDAI has urged residents to take advantage of the new email update facility by downloading or updating the Aadhaar App, which is available on both Android and Apple iOS platforms.

The action was prompted by a series of videos circulating on social media that allegedly demonstrated individuals using the BAT-BMS app to connect via Bluetooth to nearby e-rickshaws and switch off their battery systems while the vehicles were in motion.
