For customers in Surat waiting for new phones and gadgets, the parcels never arrived. Police now say they know why. The Bhavnagar Local Crime Branch (LCB) has arrested a 26-year-old Flipkart delivery agent with goods worth ₹4.60 lakh, allegedly stolen from customer parcels about 15 days ago.
The accused, Rutvik Makwana, also known as Koli, was arrested on October 23, police said on Saturday.
How He Was Caught
The LCB received a tip that a man was selling mobile phones and other items without bills or documents on a public road near the embankment of Gangajaliya Lake on Motibaug Road in Bhavnagar. Police reached the spot and found Makwana with the goods.
When asked for bills or proof of ownership, he allegedly could not provide them or give a satisfactory explanation. Police seized the items as suspected stolen property and arrested him.
The Alleged Modus Operandi
During questioning, Makwana allegedly admitted that he worked as a delivery boy for Flipkart in Surat and had stolen parcels around 15 days earlier. According to police, he would collect delivery bags containing mobile phones and other valuables meant for customers, and then abscond instead of delivering them or returning them to the company.
He has been handed over to Gangajaliya police station for further legal proceedings.
What Was Recovered
The seized property, valued at ₹4,60,512, includes 13 smartphones from brands such as Google, Samsung, Vivo, Lava, Motorola, Poco and HMD. Officials listed a Samsung Galaxy S25 FE worth ₹53,000, two Vivo V70 FE phones worth ₹49,000 each and a Google Pixel 10 A worth ₹47,000 among them. Based on the values shared by officials, the phones alone account for about ₹4.09 lakh.
Other items include Apple AirPods worth ₹22,000, Bluetooth devices, a Fire-Boltt smartwatch, wristwatches from brands like Titan, perfumes, personal care products, chargers, a power bank, jeans, T-shirts and a Louis Philippe shirt.
Why It Matters: The Trust Gap in Last-Mile Delivery
E-commerce depends on one simple promise: the parcel you pay for reaches your door. Delivery agents handle high-value goods every day, especially during the festive season, when online orders surge. Cases like this expose a weak point in the system, where a single person controls valuable shipments between the warehouse and the customer.
The case also shows how stolen goods often enter informal markets, sold without bills at low prices to unsuspecting buyers.
What Customers Can Do
Customers should check order tracking regularly, raise a complaint with the platform immediately if a parcel is marked delivered but not received, and avoid accepting open or tampered packages. Buyers should also avoid purchasing phones or electronics without valid bills, as such items may be stolen property.
What Comes Next
The case is registered at Saroli police station in Surat city under Section 306 of the BNS, which deals with theft by a clerk or servant of property in their employer’s possession. Further investigation is underway.
