Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated a new garment manufacturing facility in Varanasi, his parliamentary constituency, in the presence of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
After the inauguration, the Prime Minister interacted with workers at the facility. Accompanied by the Chief Minister, he toured the manufacturing unit to review its facilities and operations, and also visited a product exhibition where items made at the unit were on display.
Focus on Jobs, Especially for Women
According to an official statement, the facility follows modern manufacturing practices and is expected to create meaningful employment opportunities, particularly for women, while contributing to the region’s economic progress.
The statement described the facility as an important step towards strengthening India’s textile and apparel manufacturing ecosystem and promoting industrial growth in the region.
Why It Matters
Textiles and apparel are among India’s most labour-intensive industries, and garment manufacturing in particular employs a large share of women workers. A new facility in Varanasi adds formal factory jobs to a region long known for its traditional weaving and handloom heritage, especially Banarasi silk.
The official statement also said the inauguration highlights Uttar Pradesh’s growing role as a destination for industrial investment and manufacturing-led growth. For the state, attracting such units to eastern UP is key to spreading industrial development beyond its traditional hubs.
Industry Impact
India has been working to expand its share in global apparel markets, where competition from other Asian manufacturing countries remains strong. Modern, large-scale garment units help improve productivity and export readiness, and the presence of such facilities in cities like Varanasi can encourage supporting businesses, from logistics to local suppliers.
Next on the Schedule: IAF Aerial Display at Namo Ghat
Later in the day, the Prime Minister is scheduled to witness the Air Force Day Aerial Display-2026 at Namo Ghat as Chief Guest. The event is expected to feature a range of frontline fighter aircraft, helicopters and transport aircraft, showcasing the Indian Air Force’s operational strength.
Participating aircraft are expected to include the indigenous Tejas light combat aircraft, the Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) Prachand, SU-30MKI and Rafale fighter jets, along with transport aircraft. Aircraft from the Indian Navy and the Indian Army are also expected to take part, highlighting joint operational capabilities among the armed forces.
The IAF’s display teams, including the Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team and the Sarang Helicopter Display Team, will also perform, with coordinated formations, precision manoeuvres and aerial demonstrations expected.
The Bigger Picture
The day’s two events, an industrial inauguration in the morning and a military aerial display by the Ganga in the evening, place Varanasi at the centre of both economic and national attention. For residents, it offers a combination of new job prospects and a rare chance to watch India’s air power up close.
