New Delhi: In one of the larger single-day additions to the civic body’s sanitation fleet, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Delhi BJP President Harsh Malhotra on Saturday launched over 500 vehicles for door-to-door waste collection and 250 battery-operated litter picker machines for Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) wards.
What Was Launched
According to an official statement, the rollout includes 428 auto-tippers, 128 e-rickshaws and 25 Tata 407 vehicles for door-to-door collection, together making up 581 primary collection vehicles.
For faster waste transportation, 27 refuse compactors, 5 refuse collectors and 30 hook loaders were also introduced. Another 100 compactor bins were released, while battery-operated modern litter picker machines have been deployed for cleaning roads and public places in all 250 wards of the city.
CM: Government Will Equip MCD Fully
Speaking at the event in Sarita Vihar, the Chief Minister said the Delhi government is committed to equipping the civic agency with all the resources needed to improve sanitation services.
The facilities were inaugurated in the presence of Mayor Pravesh Wahi, Deputy Mayor Monika Pant and Standing Committee Chairperson Satya Sharma.
Malhotra, in his address, claimed that development in its true sense started in the Capital only after Rekha Gupta took office following the BJP’s Assembly election victory.
Yamuna Cleanliness Drive on Sunday
The launch comes a day before a city-wide volunteer drive along the Yamuna. “The cleanliness of Mother Yamuna is our shared responsibility. Let us join the mega cleanliness drive being organised at 70 locations in Delhi on October 18 at 7.30 a.m. Reach your nearest Yamuna ghat and contribute to this public resolve,” the Chief Minister’s Office posted on X.
The Chief Minister will join volunteers at ITO Hathi Ghat-1, while Malhotra will lead the drive at Gandhi Nagar Ghat. South Delhi MP Ramvir Bidhuri will lead the effort at the Kalindi Kunj bank, and New Delhi MP Bansuri Swaraj will offer voluntary service at Ram Ghat, a Delhi BJP statement said.
Why It Matters
Door-to-door collection is the first link in any city’s waste chain. Gaps here often push garbage onto streets, vacant plots and drains. By strengthening both primary collection (auto-tippers, e-rickshaws) and secondary transport (compactors, hook loaders), the rollout targets the full journey of waste rather than just one stage.
Impact on Residents
The addition of 128 e-rickshaws is especially relevant for narrow lanes and dense colonies where larger vehicles struggle to enter. Litter pickers in all 250 wards could also mean more consistent cleaning of roads and public spaces, an area where residents frequently raise complaints.
What Comes Next
The real test will be on the ground: how regularly these vehicles run, how well routes are planned, and whether the improvement is visible in neighbourhoods over the coming months. Sunday’s Yamuna drive will be the first public showcase of the government’s sanitation focus after the launch.
