MUMBAI — Veteran Bollywood actor Jackie Shroff took to social media to pay heartfelt tributes to three iconic figures of Indian cinema and arts, honoring late character actor Achyut Potdar and legendary Kathak maestro Gopi Kishan on their birth anniversaries, while extending birthday greetings to comedy veteran Kanwarjit Paintal on his 78th birthday.
Shroff’s emotional posts resonated across the film industry, highlighting the contributions of classical artists and character actors whose careers helped shape mainstream Hindi cinema over decades.
Remembering Achyut Potdar: A Legacy on Screen
In a moving homage to Achyut Potdar, Shroff shared a vintage photograph featuring the late actor with the caption, “Always in our hearts #AchyutPotdar. Remembering Achyut Potdar ji on his birth anniversary.” To make the post personal, Shroff layered iconic dialogue audio from their 1992 crime-drama Angaar, directed by Shashilal K. Nair, where Potdar played the role of father to Shroff's character, Jaikishan (Jaggu).

Potdar’s journey into acting was unconventional. Born in Jabalpur on August 22, 1934, he served in the Indian Army and worked with Indian Oil before making his feature film debut at age 44 in Govind Nihalani's Aakrosh (1980). Over a career spanning four decades, Potdar appeared in over 125 films and nearly 100 television series. His prominent filmography includes classics such as Ardh Satya, Tezaab, Parinda, Rangeela, Vaastav, and Lage Raho Munna Bhai. Younger audiences widely recognize him for his role as the professor in Rajkumar Hirani's 3 Idiots, famous for the line, "Kehna kya chahte ho?"
Honoring Choreographer Gopi Kishan and Veteran Actor Paintal
Shroff also remembered classical dance pioneer Nataraj Gopi Kishan, sharing a monochrome photograph depicting the maestro mid-performance. Born on August 22, 1935, Gopi Kishan was one of India’s foremost Kathak exponents and film choreographers. At just 17, he became the youngest choreographer in Hindi cinema history with the 1952 film Saqi. Awarded the Padma Shri in 1975, his cinematic legacy includes landmark dance sequences in Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje, Umrao Jaan, and Naache Mayuri. He also holds a historic record for a continuous nine-hour and 20-minute Kathak performance.
Celebrating the living legend Kanwarjit Paintal on his 78th birthday, Shroff posted: “Warm Wishes, Paintal ji #HappyBirthday #KanwarjitPaintal.”
Born on August 22, 1948, in Tarn Taran, Punjab, Paintal graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in 1969. Celebrated for his comedic timing in classics like Bawarchi, Jawani Diwani, and Satte Pe Satta, as well as his portrayals of Shikhandi and Sudama in B.R. Chopra's Mahabharat, Paintal later headed FTII’s Acting Department, shaping generations of dramatic talent.
