A Major Infrastructure Push for the Capital

Gujarat's Gandhinagar district received development projects worth Rs 1,848 crore on Saturday, covering road connectivity, drainage, water supply, healthcare, public transport and urban amenities. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi marked the occasion by flagging off around 30 new electric buses under the 'PM-eBus Sewa' scheme, adding a public transport dimension to the day's broader infrastructure announcements.

Breaking Down the Rs 1,848 Crore Allocation

The overall investment is split between two major implementing bodies: works worth Rs 798 crore under the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation, and a larger allocation of Rs 1,050 crore under the state's Roads and Buildings Department. This division suggests a coordinated approach spanning both civic-level amenities managed locally and larger road infrastructure projects handled at the state level. Alongside this, Chief Minister Patel announced a further Rs 48.26 crore in new projects specifically aimed at addressing traffic congestion and strengthening urban infrastructure in the capital.

A Symbolic Bus Ride

After the flag-off ceremony, Patel and Sanghavi chose to travel as ordinary passengers on one of the newly inaugurated e-buses from the event venue to the Ministers' Residential Complex, a gesture that put the new public transport initiative directly in view of officials and the public alike. They were accompanied on the ride by Minister of State for Urban Development Darshna Vaghela, MLAs Rita Patel and Alpesh Thakor, Mayor Mira Patel, Deputy Mayor Natuji Thakor, Standing Committee Chairman Gaurang, City BJP president Dr Ashish Dave, and several other municipal office-bearers and former mayors.

Targeted Traffic and Connectivity Projects

Among the specific works announced, a Rs 20.76 crore underpass is planned at the Bhat-Koteshwar Crossing, intended to ease the growing traffic burden on the Gandhinagar-Koba-Airport Road, a route that has evidently seen rising congestion as the surrounding area develops. The government will also allocate Rs 12.80 crore to strengthen the bridge over the Sabarmati River connecting Raksha Shakti Circle toward GIFT City-Shahpur, an important corridor given GIFT City's growing prominence as a financial and business hub. Further funds include Rs 7.70 crore for junction and road development from GIFT City toward PDPU, and Rs 7 crore for road safety and paver works between Raksha Shakti Circle and GIFT City Circle, together forming a cluster of investments focused on improving connectivity around the GIFT City corridor specifically.

Expanding Civic Infrastructure Beyond the Core City

The civic works extend beyond arterial roads to more localised improvements as well. These include an 80-metre road connecting Airport Road with Raysan, a service road linking Raksha Shakti to Sargasan, and new cement-concrete roads across several villages, including Khoraj, Pethapur, Randheja, Kolavada, Vavol, Vasana Hadmatiya and Adivada. This spread across multiple outlying villages signals an effort to extend infrastructure investment beyond Gandhinagar's central, older sectors into areas more recently incorporated into the city's administrative boundary.

Water, Drainage and Healthcare Upgrades

To address recurring monsoon-related issues, a new overhead water tank will be constructed in Randheja, while new drainage lines will be laid across Sectors 1 to 30 and seven surrounding villages, directly targeting waterlogging concerns that have evidently affected these areas during the rainy season. On the healthcare front, a new urban primary health centre will be established in Sargasan, adding to the city's existing network of medical facilities.

Child Development and Public Spaces

The development plan also includes modern, theme-based smart Anganwadis, designed to offer children facilities comparable to those found in private play schools, a notable upgrade to early childhood care infrastructure. Additional civic amenities include modern gardens in Jhundal, Amiyapur and Sector 20, the renovation of the Swarnim Cultural Centre at Raysan, and the development of Raysan Chowk, rounding out a mix of functional infrastructure and public recreational spaces.

Officials Frame the Work Within a Larger Vision

Mayor Mira Patel positioned Saturday's announcements within a longer-term transformation of the city, tracing its origins back to a vision first laid out by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation for Gandhinagar's development, and the vision of transforming it from an administrative centre into a world-class smart and green city is being realised," she said. She also credited Gandhinagar MP and Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah for his continued attention to the city's development, including planning for new lakes, gardens and facilities in outlying villages, and acknowledged the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister for approving and financially supporting the various development proposals. She specifically thanked the Chief Minister for inaugurating and laying foundation stones for municipal works worth approximately Rs 798 crore.

A City With Existing Infrastructure Momentum

Gandhinagar North MLA Rita Patel added further context on the city's ongoing development trajectory, noting that Gandhinagar had already built up modern infrastructure in education and healthcare, including libraries, UN Mehta Hospital, Civil Hospital, and various primary and community health centres. She also highlighted the scale of the city's green infrastructure efforts, noting that around 125 modern gardens, including the Central Vista, had already been developed, alongside the recent planting of approximately 18 lakh trees, underscoring that Saturday's announcements build on an already active development pipeline rather than marking an isolated initiative.
