Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh is getting ready to mark its 71st Foundation Day with a three-day state-level celebration from November 1 to 3. The programme will showcase the state’s development journey, cultural heritage and achievements in agriculture, a minister said on Friday.
“We are going to celebrate the 71st Foundation Day of Madhya Pradesh from November 1 to November 3. Under the leadership of the Chief Minister, Madhya Pradesh is making continuous progress. This year, the celebrations will focus on development, heritage and agriculture,” the minister said. Calling it a major state event, he added, “This Foundation Day is going to be both magnificent and grand.”
Farmers at the Heart of This Year’s Celebration
What sets this year apart is its clear focus on agriculture. The celebrations come as the state government observes 2026 as the Year of Farmers’ Welfare, and the three-day programme will give special emphasis to agriculture and farmer welfare. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has directed that the Foundation Day be celebrated with the theme “Prosperous Farmer – Prosperous State.” He has asked officials to organise exhibitions on advanced and natural farming and to honour achievers in agriculture. On the evening of November 1, a light music programme with renowned artists from across the country is planned, followed by a fireworks display.
The farm focus fits the state’s profile. Madhya Pradesh is one of India’s major agricultural states, and farming remains the main livelihood for a large share of its population. Putting farmers at the centre of the state’s biggest annual celebration sends a clear message about the government’s priorities and links the festivities to its year-long welfare campaign. Last year’s 70th Foundation Day was also held as a three-day event from November 1 to 3, at Lal Parade Ground in Bhopal.
How Madhya Pradesh Was Born
Madhya Pradesh was formed on November 1, 1956, after the reorganisation of states. It was created by merging the erstwhile Madhya Pradesh region with Madhya Bharat, Vindhya Pradesh and Bhopal, while the Marathi-speaking Vidarbha region was transferred to Bombay State.
The state’s map changed again on November 1, 2000, when Chhattisgarh was carved out of Madhya Pradesh as a separate state. November 1 is still observed as Madhya Pradesh’s Foundation Day, and Chhattisgarh also marks its formation on the same date.
Seven decades on, the Foundation Day has become more than a ceremonial date. It is now an occasion for the state to present its progress and its cultural identity, from tribal traditions to classical heritage. This year, with farmers in the spotlight, the celebration will also be a test of how well the state’s development story connects with its rural heartland.
