Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday announced that the state Cabinet has passed a resolution to rename Noida International Airport in Jewar as Narendra Modi International Airport, Jewar, Noida.

The resolution was passed to mark Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 25 years in public service. “It is a moment of immense pride for the UP Cabinet as it is from the land of UP (Varanasi) that PM Modi was elected as MP,” the Chief Minister said.

“The UP Cabinet is grateful to PM Modi for gifting Noida International Airport to the state, which is UP’s biggest airport and is going to become the country’s biggest aviation hub in the future,” he said.

About the Airport

Detail Information
Location Jewar, Gautam Buddha Nagar (Noida)
First phase inaugurated March 2026, by PM Modi
Initial capacity About 12 million passengers a year
Long-term plan Four phases; expected to rank among Asia’s largest airports

Why It Matters: What Happens Next

A state cabinet resolution is the first step. Renaming an airport generally also needs the approval of the Central government before it becomes official. Until then, the airport continues under its current name.

The move follows a wider set of events marking the Prime Minister’s 25 years as head of government, as part of the Seva Sankalp Abhiyan, which runs until October 17. Naming major infrastructure after a sitting leader is not unprecedented; the cricket stadium in Ahmedabad was named Narendra Modi Stadium in 2021. Such decisions often draw political reactions, and responses from opposition parties are likely to follow.

1,725 Electric Buses

In another key decision, Energy and Urban Development Minister Arvind Kumar Sharma announced that 1,725 new electric buses will be deployed across 18 municipal corporation areas, roughly 96 per city on average. Half will be bought from the lowest bidder in the tender, and the other half from companies that manufacture buses within Uttar Pradesh, a move aimed at supporting local manufacturing.

Development Claims

The Chief Minister also cited projects such as the BrahMos missile manufacturing unit and the PM MITRA Textile Park in Lucknow, improved connectivity through expressways, Metro and RRTS, and welfare figures including over 65 lakh houses under PM Awas Yojana and free food grains for 3.67 crore ration cardholders.

The Bottom Line

If approved at the national level, Jewar’s airport, set to become one of Asia’s largest, will carry the Prime Minister’s name. For now, it is a state proposal marking a political milestone, alongside practical moves like electric buses for UP’s cities.
