  • Loco hub: Foundation laid for a Raipur facility to maintain up to 300 high-horsepower electric locomotives.

For the people of Raoghat in southern Chhattisgarh, Tuesday brought a sound they had never heard at their station: the whistle of a train. Indian Railways inaugurated the Tadoki–Raoghat and Abhanpur–Kurud broad-gauge lines, bringing rail service to Raoghat for the first time since Independence.

New passenger trains between Raoghat and Raipur and between Raipur and Kurud were flagged off, and the foundation stone of an electric locomotive maintenance facility was laid in Raipur. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai attended the event, while Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw joined via video conferencing.

The Line That Took Years to Finish

With the 17.5-km Tadoki–Raoghat stretch, the 95-km Dalli-Rajhara–Rowghat line has reached full operational status. The project was completed at a cost of Rs 1,628 crore.

Building railways in this part of Chhattisgarh has been especially challenging. The region, part of the larger Bastar area, has dense forests, difficult terrain and a long history of security concerns, which slowed infrastructure work for years.

What Changes for Local People

The new line is expected to make life easier for residents in several ways:

  • Education: Students can travel to colleges and coaching centres in bigger towns more easily.
  • Healthcare: Patients can reach hospitals in Raipur faster and more cheaply.
  • Jobs and trade: Workers and traders get a reliable link to markets and employment centres.
  • Low fare: At just ₹55, the Raipur–Raoghat service offers affordable travel for students, youth and daily commuters.

A Boost for Steel

The line also has major industrial value. It will speed up the movement of iron ore from the Rowghat region to the Bhilai Steel Plant and support the wider iron and steel industry.

Abhanpur–Kurud Opens Too

Under the Abhanpur–Dhamtari gauge conversion project, the 22-km Abhanpur–Kurud section is now complete. It gives residents more travel options to Raipur and supports trade and daily commuting. Work on the remaining Kurud–Dhamtari stretch is expected to be finished soon.

What the Leaders Said

Chief Minister Sai thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Minister Vaishnaw on behalf of the state’s three crore people. He said Chhattisgarh has received over ₹7,000 crore in this year’s railway budget, and that the projects will drive industrial, commercial and social growth in remote areas.

Minister Vaishnaw congratulated the people of the state and listed other key works, including gauge conversion of the Kendi–Abhanpur–Rajim–Dhamtari section, multi-tracking projects, the recently approved Pendra Road–Bilaspur–Uslapur third line and the ongoing Kharsia–Parmalkasa double-line work.

Why It Matters

For decades, remote parts of southern Chhattisgarh remained cut off from the national rail grid. A working train link does more than move passengers and goods. It brings remote communities closer to opportunities that many other parts of India have long taken for granted.

What Comes Next

The Raipur facility, built to handle up to 300 high-horsepower electric locomotives, will improve engine availability and support growing freight needs. With more lines underway, Chhattisgarh’s rail map is set to keep expanding.
