Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Karan Johar’s directorial debut, turned 28 on Friday. Marking the occasion, Dharma Productions shared a video of the film’s most memorable scenes and songs, opening with Shah Rukh Khan’s famous line, “Pyaar dosti hai.”

“Our ode to everything pyaar & dosti. Happy #28YearsOfKuchKuchHotaHai to all of us!” the production house wrote. Karan Johar shared the video on his Instagram Stories with a simple “28 years” and heart emojis.

The Week the Film’s Secrets Came Out

The anniversary comes at an apt moment. Just days ago, on the premiere episode of Koffee With Karan Season 9, Salman Khan and Karan Johar shared behind-the-scenes stories from the film. Karan revealed that Salman agreed to play Aman without hearing the full narration and without taking a fee, and that the emotional climax had to be completely reshot after it was accidentally filmed in slow motion. Salman pushed his next shoot by a day to finish it.

Why It Matters: A Film That Grew Up With Its Audience

Released on October 16, 1998, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai shaped how a generation thought about campus romance, friendship and love. Rahul, Anjali and Tina became household names, and the film’s fashion, from Rahul’s “Cool” chains to Anjali’s sporty look, became pop culture.

Twenty-eight years on, its appeal has crossed generations. Its songs still play at weddings and college fests, and its dialogues continue to circulate as memes and reels, introducing the film to viewers who weren’t even born when it released.

The Music That Stayed

Jatin-Lalit’s soundtrack remains one of Hindi cinema’s most loved albums.

Song Why it’s remembered
“Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” The emotional title track
