While most of North India waits for Ravan Dahan this evening, a small coastal town in Tamil Nadu is gearing up for its own grand Dussehra finale. Kulasekaranpattinam, near Tiruchendur in Thoothukudi district, is expecting lakhs of devotees at the Mutharamman Temple for the midnight Soorasamharam ceremony on Tuesday. To manage the crowds, police have deployed 3,700 personnel.
A Festival of Faith and Colour
The festival began with a ceremonial flag hoisting on October 11. Since then, devotees from Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and other places have been arriving at the shrine. Many come dressed in elaborate costumes after observing fasting and religious discipline, which makes this one of the most visually striking Dussehra celebrations in the country.
