Aishwarya Rai’s Ideal Partner: Humour, Respect, Compatibility

Key Highlights

  • Throwback chat: Aishwarya Rai once shared her idea of an ideal partner with veteran actress Farida Jalal.
  • Top qualities: She wanted someone sensitive, respectful, uncomplicated and able to laugh at himself.
  • No judgement: Calling herself a “people’s person”, she said her partner should not be judgmental.
  • The magic word: She named compatibility as the thread that keeps a relationship strong.
  • Love story: Aishwarya married Abhishek Bachchan on April 20, 2007, and the couple welcomed daughter Aaradhya in 2011.

Long before she became one half of one of Bollywood’s most talked-about couples, Aishwarya Rai had a clear idea of what she wanted in a partner. In a candid throwback conversation with veteran actress Farida Jalal, the ‘Devdas’ star spoke openly about the qualities she valued most, and her answers feel as relatable today as they did then.

Her Checklist for Love

Aishwarya’s list was refreshingly simple. Instead of looks or status, she focused on character.

“See, sensitive, have a great sense of humor, have an ability to laugh at himself. Very important. Respect, respect others and himself. Not complex. Should be able to relate to people for who they are, because I guess I am a people’s person. So, uncomplicated, who doesn’t... who is not judgmental. Very human. That’s very important,” she told Farida Jalal.

Why ‘Not Judgmental’ Mattered to Her

For someone who had already spent years in the public eye, meeting countless people, it is easy to see why Aishwarya placed so much value on a partner who accepts others as they are. Her emphasis on being “very human” shows she was looking for warmth and openness more than glamour.

Compatibility: The Magic Word

Aishwarya also shared what she believes keeps a relationship going in the long run.

“And more than anything else, I think, see these... that will just go on and on and on. I think what’s important at the end of the day is compatibility. I’ve always said this. I think that will be the magic word between us. I mean, love definitely. All that will be there. But I think the fine thread that will probably link us is compatibility, I think,” she explained.

Her point is one many relationship experts would agree with: love may spark a connection, but shared values and understanding help it last.

From Co-Stars to Life Partners

Aishwarya and Abhishek Bachchan have shared the screen in several films, including ‘Kuch Naa Kaho’, ‘Dhoom 2’, ‘Sarkar Raj’, ‘Umrao Jaan’, ‘Guru’ and ‘Raavan’. Reports suggest they first met in 1999 during a photo shoot for their first project together, ‘Dhaai Akshar Prem Ke’.

After being in a relationship for some time, the couple married on April 20, 2007, in a grand traditional ceremony. On November 16, 2011, they welcomed their daughter, Aaradhya Bachchan.

Why It Still Resonates

In an age of dating apps and fast-moving relationships, Aishwarya’s words offer a simple reminder. Humour, respect, kindness and compatibility are qualities that never go out of style. Her answer also shows a side of the global icon that fans rarely see: thoughtful, grounded and clear about what matters.

The Bottom Line

Aishwarya Rai’s old wishlist is less about the perfect man and more about the kind of partnership that lasts. That is perhaps why the clip continues to strike a chord with fans years later.
