Delhi AQI 187 Today; Toxic Foam Returns to Yamuna
Delhi’s AQI stood at 187 on Monday, but 12 stations remained in ‘poor’ as white foam resurfaced on the Yamuna at Kalindi Kunj. Check area-wise AQI here.
Key Highlights
- Citywide AQI at 187: Delhi recorded an AQI of 187 at 8 a.m. on Monday, in the 'moderate' category, as per CPCB data.
- Hotspots stay in 'poor': Jahangirpuri (251), Vivek Vihar (240) and R.K. Puram (233) led a list of 12 stations above the 200 mark.
- Cleaner pockets: Badarpur (125) and Burari (128) posted the lowest readings in the city.
- GRAP Stage 1 in force: CAQM invoked the first stage across Delhi-NCR on October 21, banning coal and firewood in tandoors and restricting diesel generators.
- Yamuna foam is back: Thick white foam near Kalindi Kunj has renewed questions over river clean-up, days after CM Rekha Gupta hailed Rs 9,000-crore infrastructure projects.
Delhi woke up to marginally better air on Monday, but the headline number hides a sharply divided city. The national capital recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 187 at 8 a.m., placing it in the 'moderate' category, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Yet a closer look at station-level data shows that large parts of Delhi were still breathing air in the 'poor' range, while a fresh layer of white foam on the Yamuna added a second pollution worry to the mix.
A Tale of Two Delhis
The gap between the cleanest and most polluted pockets was striking. Badarpur recorded an AQI of 125 and Burari 128, followed by Nangloi at 150, JNU at 157 and Mandir Marg at 165. At the other end, Jahangirpuri touched 251, Vivek Vihar 240, R.K. Puram 233, CRRI Mathura Road 231, Punjabi Bagh 229, Narela 227 and Mundka 226.
