Vasai-Virar Roads Turn Impassable

Perhaps most significantly for the city's transport network, railway tracks at Kurla station were flooded following the continuous downpour, directly affecting train movement in and around one of Mumbai's busier railway junctions.

IMD Issues a Yellow Alert

In response to the ongoing weather conditions, the India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar for Sunday, forecasting thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, light to moderate rainfall, and strong winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph in some areas. The weather department elaborated on the expected conditions, stating that the sky would remain generally cloudy with occasional moderate rain or thundershowers, accompanied by lightning and strong winds, while noting that isolated areas could see heavier rainfall spells.

Why This Timing Adds Complexity

The persistence of this rain spell carries particular significance given its timing. Sunday marks the first day of the Ganesh festival, one of Mumbai's largest annual public celebrations, drawing enormous crowds for pandal visits and processions across the city. Continued waterlogging and transport disruptions during this period could complicate movement for both residents and visitors participating in festival activities, adding a logistical dimension to what is typically one of the city's busiest and most vibrant periods of the year.

More Rain on the Horizon

The IMD has indicated that Mumbai is likely to witness further rainfall on Monday as well, with prevailing weather conditions expected to sustain rainfall activity over the city and its neighbouring areas in the coming days. For Sunday itself, the department has forecast moderate rainfall, directly coinciding with the festival's opening day.

Concerns Ahead of Idol Immersion

Looking further ahead, the idol immersion processions, a major and highly anticipated component of the Ganesh festival, are scheduled to begin on Tuesday. According to the current weather forecast, the city is expected to receive light to moderate rainfall on that day as well, raising questions about how the ongoing wet spell might affect the scale and conduct of immersion activities, which typically involve large processions moving through the city's streets toward various water bodies and the coastline.
