Why This Matters for a City-Wide Festival

Mumbai's Ganesh Festival involves thousands of pandals set up across residential and public spaces, many of which require short-term power access for lighting, sound systems and decorative displays over the course of the celebration. Offering these connections at residential rather than commercial rates, combined with a fast 48-hour turnaround, reduces both the cost burden and administrative delay for often informally organised community pandals, a detail that matters given how many of these setups are run by neighbourhood committees rather than commercial entities with dedicated resources for utility applications.

Building on Last Year's Scale

The company pointed to its track record from the previous year as evidence of its readiness to handle this year's demand. "Last year, we successfully provided uninterrupted power to over 1000 Ganesh pandals across the city. We've made thorough preparations to expedite connection approvals and maintain reliable power supply throughout the festival. Our dedicated Quick Response Team is strategically deployed to address any issues swiftly," the spokesperson said, signalling that the infrastructure and response mechanisms built up over previous festival seasons are being scaled up again this year.

Extensive Lighting for Immersion Sites

Beyond individual pandal connections, Adani Electricity confirmed it will provide illumination through 2,958 floodlights installed at more than 167 idol immersion locations across the city. Immersion sites typically see large crowds gathering after dark during the festival's concluding days, making adequate lighting a significant safety consideration alongside its role in supporting the visual spectacle of the immersion processions.

Safety Guidelines for Pandal Organisers

Given the scale of temporary electrical setups involved, Adani Electricity has laid out detailed safety guidelines for organisers. The company is urging pandals to use only authorised, licensed electrical contractors for wiring work, and has outlined a series of specific precautions: ensuring wiring readiness at the site, restricting meter cabin access to authorised personnel, using standard wires and switches, installing a single isolation point for emergencies, securing wires with standard insulation tape, maintaining clear access to meter cabins and switches, and ensuring connected load stays within sanctioned limits.

Additional safety measures recommended include keeping a fire extinguisher with clear operating instructions near the meter cabin, displaying a danger board, and ensuring proper earthing at the site. Organisers have also been explicitly warned against unauthorised extensions or direct power tapping, creating unnecessary wiring joints, blocking meter cabin access, exceeding sanctioned load limits, or allowing public access to floodlights, pedestals, fans or insulated joints.

A Balance Between Festivity and Precaution

Taken together, Adani Electricity's initiative reflects an attempt to balance the practical demands of a citywide festival, requiring fast, affordable and widespread power access, with the safety risks inherent in large numbers of temporary electrical setups operating simultaneously across densely populated areas, particularly around immersion sites where crowd density adds further complexity to electrical safety management.
