According to synoptic bulletins released by RMC weather scientists, the unstable weather is driven by a weak low-pressure system and lower-tropospheric wind convergence persisting off the Tamil Nadu coast. The meteorological influence is expected to sustain steady precipitation patterns across Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Ranipet districts through Sunday.
City Conditions: High Humidity and Evening Showers
Ground observations in Chennai indicate high ambient moisture combined with elevated daytime temperatures, creating intensely humid conditions across the metropolitan area. Daytime highs are projected to peak between 37°C and 38°C—roughly two to three degrees above seasonal averages—while night temperatures will hover between 27°C and 28°C.
"While daytime heating combined with coastal moisture will lead to sticky, uncomfortable weather early in the day, thermal convection is expected to trigger evening or nighttime convective storms, bringing brief, intense relief," noted RMC meteorology officials during the daily weather brief.
Sky conditions over the city will remain partly cloudy throughout the day, with convective activity intensifying during late evening hours.
Western Ghats and Hill Districts on Alert
As the weather system shifts slightly westward early next week, rainfall intensity is set to scale up over Tamil Nadu's high-altitude regions. The RMC has placed the hilly tracts of the Nilgiris and the Ghat areas of Coimbatore district on alert for heavy rainfall isolated over single or two locations on August 24 and 25.
By August 26 and 27, the heaviest activity is expected to taper off, leaving isolated, moderate rainfall restricted primarily to districts along the Western Ghats line. The remaining interior districts of Tamil Nadu, as well as the Union Territories of Puducherry and Karaikal, are slated for comparatively dry or partly cloudy weather, barring localized short-lived convective showers.

Local civic agencies and traffic authorities have stepped up monitoring along known waterlogging hotspots across Greater Chennai. Motorists are urged to exercise caution during sudden downpours due to reduced visibility and temporary street flooding.
