There is an added incentive for both squads at these Asian Games, with gold medal winners securing direct tickets to the 2028 Olympics, a prospect that will weigh heavily on the minds of both the Harmanpreet Singh-led men's team and the Salima Tete-led women's side as they enter their respective campaigns.

The Men's Team's Path to Redemption

The Indian men's team failed to progress to the semifinals at the recent World Cup, finishing a disappointing eighth, and will be looking to iron out the flaws from that campaign at the Asiad. Head coach Craig Fulton addressed this directly ahead of the tournament. "These are lessons, and the only way to treat them as lessons learned is to turn that learning into action. That's what we've got to do now. We've discussed everything, gone through everything and highlighted areas needing improvement. At the same time, it's now about action," Fulton said, as quoted by Hockey India.

A Rich History at the Asian Games

Indian men are four-time gold medallists at the continental showpiece, having won the title in 1966, 1998, 2014 and 2022. They are also the reigning two-time Olympic bronze medallists and would like to secure their Los Angeles Games qualification as early as possible in the competition rather than leaving it to chance later in the tournament.

The Men's Pool and Key Rivals

The Indian men are placed in Pool A alongside Indonesia, South Korea, Japan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, and will face significant tests against fellow four-time gold winners South Korea and 2018 champions Japan as the group stage progresses.

The Women's Team Building on Historic Momentum

The Indian women will be looking to carry forward the momentum from the 2026 World Cup, where they secured their best finish in 52 years by placing fifth, despite falling short of the semifinals. Head coach Janneke Marijne reflected on that campaign while keeping his focus firmly on the tournament ahead. "We did something remarkable and historical, but we have to move on to the next tournament... You have to close a chapter before you move to the next one," Marijne said.

The Women's Team's Asian Games History

The women's team won its only Asian Games gold back in 1982 and secured a more recent bronze at the Hangzhou 2023 Games. They also achieved a historic fourth-place finish at the 2020 Olympics, though they failed to qualify for the 2024 Paris Games, a gap that adds particular significance to this year's Olympic qualification opportunity through the Asian Games.

A Tough Road Against China

Olympic qualification will be a clear priority for India's women, but they will face tough competition from China, who are four-time gold medallists, the defending Asian Games champions, and the reigning Olympic silver medallists, making China arguably the most formidable obstacle standing between India and a return to Olympic hockey.

The Women's Pool

The Indian women's team is placed in Pool B alongside Uzbekistan, Indonesia, Thailand, Japan and Singapore, a group that will determine their path forward in the knockout stages of the tournament.

The Indian women's team will be in action against Uzbekistan on Sunday at 7:30 AM IST at the Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium. The men's team will face Indonesia in their Pool A opener on the same day at 11:30 AM IST, also at the Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium, giving Indian hockey fans a full day of action to follow as both campaigns get underway.
