Tripura Opens First Tea Auction Centre in Agartala
Tripura CM Manik Saha opens the state’s first tea auction centre in Agartala, aiming to cut sale time by 40% and get better prices for 2,800 small growers.
Key Highlights
- Historic first: CM Manik Saha inaugurated Tripura's first tea auction centre in Agartala, making it the second Northeast state after Assam and the fifth in India with such a facility.
- Faster sales: Selling a tea consignment currently takes around 44 days; TTDCL expects the new centre to cut this by about 40 per cent.
- Ending outside dependence: Over 60 per cent of Tripura's tea is currently sold through auction centres in Guwahati and West Bengal.
- Small growers in focus: Around 2,800 small tea growers contribute nearly 30 per cent of the state's annual output of about 90 lakh kg.
- Buyers being courted: TTDCL has held talks with brokers and buyers in Kolkata and Guwahati, and several firms have shown interest.
For decades, a cup of Tripura tea has travelled hundreds of kilometres before it even reached a buyer. That may now change. Chief Minister Manik Saha on Thursday inaugurated the state's first tea auction centre in Agartala, a move that makes Tripura the second state in the Northeast after Assam, and the fifth in the country, to host such a facility.
The ceremony was held at the Pandit Nehru Complex in Gurkhabasti, on the outskirts of Agartala, in the presence of State Industries and Commerce Minister Santan Chakma. The foundation stone for the centre had been laid in March 2024.
