Key Highlights

  • Throwback look: Anil Kapoor wore the same coat, shirt and trousers from Mr. India (1987) on his show India Ke Top 1%.
  • The surprise: The iconic jacket was bought from Mumbai’s Chor Bazaar.
  • Still fits: “After 39 years, everything still fits me!”
  • He kept it: When the team wished for the original costume, Anil revealed he had preserved it.
  • The theme: The episode honours people who serve the country without expecting anything in return.

Anil Kapoor brought back his Mr. India look on the sets of India Ke Top 1%: The Anil Kapoor Show, wearing the exact coat, shirt and trousers he wore in the 1987 classic. And it turns out he never let them go.

“I would say the shirt still fits me, the trousers still fit me, the jacket still fits me. After 39 years, everything still fits me! The team said wish we could get the Mr. India costume, and I was like I’d preserved it,” he said.

A Chor Bazaar Find

The most surprising detail is where the jacket came from. “The jacket I bought from Chor Bazaar,” Anil revealed. He added that his current long hair matches the look too: “Coincidentally, maine baal bhi lambe kiye hue hain, jaise mere ‘Mr. India’ mein the. Toh aaj baal bhi suit kar rahe hain!”

“Everyone Can Become Mr. India”

The costume fits the episode’s theme. “It is a very socially relevant episode that we are doing,” Anil said, recalling what Raj Kapoor had said after watching the film. “What is the takeaway from the film? The takeaway is that everyone can become Mr. India. This episode is about those jo desh ki sewa karte hain. They do things for the country without really expecting anything.”

Why It Matters: An Outfit Worth More Than Its Price

Mumbai’s Chor Bazaar is famous for second-hand goods and vintage finds picked up for a bargain. That a jacket from its lanes went on to become part of one of Hindi cinema’s most recognisable costumes is a reminder of how classics were often made on modest budgets, and how the character, not the clothes, made them iconic.

The fact that it still fits after nearly four decades also adds to Anil Kapoor’s reputation as one of Bollywood’s most famously fit veterans.

About Mr. India

Directed by Shekhar Kapur, Mr. India (1987) starred Anil Kapoor as Arun Verma, a kind-hearted violinist who cares for orphans and gets a device that makes him invisible. With Sridevi and Amrish Puri’s legendary villain Mogambo, the film remains one of Bollywood’s most loved superhero stories.

Where to Watch

India Ke Top 1%: The Anil Kapoor Show airs on Star Plus and streams on JioHotstar.

The Bottom Line

A Chor Bazaar jacket, a 39-year-old memory and a message about everyday heroes: Anil Kapoor’s throwback look proves that some things, and some stars, never go out of fashion.
