Maharashtra Drought: How PMKSY Watershed Structures Are Saving Crops in Pune Villages
DoLR Secretary Dilip Kumar reviewed watershed works in Pune’s Khed Project villages and urged villagers to maintain water structures for 20 years, Hiware Bazar style.
Key Highlights:
- Field review: DoLR Secretary Dilip Kumar inspected watershed works in Varude, Gulani and Wafgaon villages of Pune district on October 30, 2026.
- More crops a year: Villagers said watershed works in 11 villages under the Khed Project have raised groundwater levels, allowing farmers to grow two to three crops annually.
- Help in a dry year: Despite drought-like conditions this year, water in farm ponds and wells has helped irrigate standing crops.
- 20-year upkeep call: Kumar asked villagers to take collective responsibility for maintaining the structures so they keep working for the next 20 years.
- Hiware Bazar as the goal: He urged the Khed Project villages to become water-secure and self-reliant along the lines of Hiware Bazar.
This has been a drought-like year in parts of Maharashtra, yet farmers in some villages of Pune district are still irrigating their standing crops. Villagers say the reason is the water harvesting structures built around them under a central government watershed scheme.
