MP Students Protest After Caterpillars Found in Hostel Meal

Discovery of Contamination and Persistent Grievances

According to student representatives, caterpillars were discovered embedded within the dal and rice served during Friday’s lunch session. Demonstrators stated that food contamination is not an isolated incident, alleging that insects and substandard ingredients have been found in their meals multiple times a month despite recurring verbal complaints to hostel authorities.

Students further submitted a formal memorandum to district administrators, outlining chronic operational shortcomings:

• Substandard Meal Preparation: Rice is frequently served undercooked alongside watery dal lacking essential spices and pulses, deviating significantly from government-mandated nutritional menus.

• Hostel Staff Misbehavior: Kitchen personnel and the hostel warden reportedly respond with verbal aggression and intimidation whenever students raise concerns regarding food safety.

• Staff Misconduct: Several students alleged that kitchen employees report for duty under the influence of alcohol, demanding money from residents for personal use and threatening false disciplinary complaints to families if refused.

Administrative Response and Probe Committee Formation

Responding to the protest, City Magistrate Bajrang Bahadur assured the students that the district administration has taken serious note of the allegations regarding food safety, hygiene, and staff conduct.

"The students have complained about poor quality food being served in the hostel and rude behavior by the staff," City Magistrate Bajrang Bahadur stated. "Directions have been issued for an immediate investigation into the matter."

To investigate the grievances, the administration constituted a four-member inquiry committee tasked with visiting the facility, interviewing residents, inspecting kitchen conditions, and evaluating raw ingredient storage.

"The Assistant Commissioner of the Tribal Affairs Department has also been called," Magistrate Bahadur added. "The inquiry team has been asked to record the statements of students, inspect the food served, and examine the hostel arrangements. Further action will be taken based on the inquiry report."

The incident comes amid heightened scrutiny over food security and living conditions across government-operated educational hostels in rural Madhya Pradesh. Similar incidents involving poor quality grain and contamination have sparked regional student protests, prompting calls for stricter third-party audits of catering vendors and warden accountability.

District officials confirmed that appropriate administrative and legal action will follow once the four-member committee submits its findings. The student demonstration concluded after senior officials delivered firm assurances of transparent investigation and remedial measures.
